The Spitfire Supermarine were used during the WWII, especially the Battle of Britain against the German Messerschmitt Bf 109 with great success. 

They outperformed them in terms of speed, altitude and maneuverability. Hence, the Spitfire were frequently assigned to defeat the German fighters while the Hurricanes attacked their bombers.
