The Lockheed P38 Lightning a long-ranged fighter which proved to be a very versatile aircraft during the World War II.  

On 5 April 1943, the P38Fs of the 82nd destroyed 31 enemy aircraft, which helped 
testablish air superiority in the area. They were given a German nickname "der Gabelschwanzteufel" which means the Fork-Tailed Devil.
